State College’s Battista captures D6 sectional golf crown
State College cleaned up during the District 6 Class AAA sectional golf tournament on Monday at Sinking Valley Country Club.
The Little Lions won the team race by shooting a 343 and Ryan Battista was the medalist of the event.
Battista shot an 8-over 80 to finish one shot ahead of teammate Kyle Snyder. Altoona’s Derek McAlkich and Central Mountain’s Matt Storeman rounded out the top three with 83s.
Alex Stewart’s 89, Tyler Nordblom’s 93 and Max Walker’s 94 completed State College’s competitors.
The Little Lions compete again Wednesday for the two-day District 6 Individual Championships at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Mangene, Wolves capture sectional titles
CRESSON St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Jack Mangene edged Mount Union’s Trey Heffelfinger by one stroke to capture the District 6 Class AA sectional title at Summit Country Club.
Mangene shot a 3-over 75 to lead the Wolves to the team title. They shot 333 as a team to out-pace Bishop McCort by 12 strokes.
Matt Steyers was the only other St. Joseph’s golfer in the top 10 with a 9-over 81.
Mangene, Steyers and the rest of the Wolves compete again Wednesday in the two-day District 6 Individual Championships at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Philipsburg-Osceola’s Brandon Singer finished 15th with a round of 85. Penns Valley had Jesse Darlington (87) and Ryan Johnson (88) competing.
BEA shuts out P-O
PHILIPSBURG Seth Koleno collected a hat trick to help Bald Eagle Area in a 5-0 win over Philipsburg-Osceola.
Koleno’s first score came in the 37th minute and the finale was in the 61st minute. He added his other goal to open the second half in the 42nd minute.
Trent Donley and Jacob Michael had the other goals for the Eagles (9-2). Garrett Giedroc led BEA with two assists and Michael and Donley each had one.
The Mounties’ Caleb Pellerite had nine saves in the net.
CCCA tops Johnstown Christian
STATE COLLEGE Ethan Gore collected four goals as Centre County Christian Academy topped Johnstown Christian 10-4.
Gore had two goals in each half. Mintesinot Borst also had a hat trick for the Bulldogs as Jayden Walker (2) and Daniel Witherite had the other scores.
Walker led CCCA with three assists.
The Bluejays’ Michael Hartman had a hat trick.
Catchmark leads Red Raiders over Rams in double overtime
SPRING MILLS Daniel Catchmark finished off a dramatic battle between Bellefonte and Penns Valley, giving the Red Raiders a 2-1 win in the second overtime.
Catchmark had both Red Raider goals, first in the 28th minute and the game-winner in the 91st minute.
“It was a great game between two local teams,” Bellefonte coach Scott Martz said. “Penns Valley was very aggressive tonight and won the 50-50 balls. We stayed composed and finished off the final shot. It was a hard-fought win for us.”
The Rams took the lead first off the foot of Sam Krupp in the eighth minute.
Boys’ cross country
Myers, Rea, Thomas lead P-O to win
PHILIPSBURG Zach Myers, Josh Rea and Mathew Thomas went 1-2-3 to lead Philipsburg-Osceola over Cambria Heights 21-34.
Myers finished with a time of 20:17, just over one minute faster than Rea. Thomas’ time was 21:35.
Cole Hoover (fifth, 22:18) and Ronnie Piato (10th, 23:10) also finished in the top 10 for the Mounties.
Girls’ cross country
Cambria Heights too much for P-O
PHILIPSBURG Cambria Heights claimed the top-three spots to beat Philipsburg-Osceola 19-36.
Sam Bainey was the highest finisher for the Lady Mounties in fourth with a time of 25:04. The Lady Highlanders’ Maggie McMullen came across with a winning time of 23:12.
Hannah Wildman was the next P-O runner in fifth with a time of 25:52.
West Branch blanks Lady Mounties
ALLPORT West Branch recorded 41 shots on goal as it topped Philipsburg-Osceola 5-0.
The Lady Mounties’ Anya Tocimak and Jocelyn Hutton combined for 18 saves. Tocimak led with 13.
Jen Adams had a pair of the Lady Warriors’ goals.
Hugars lead BEA to sweep
ALLPORT Mae and Grace Hugar combined for 22 kills as Bald Eagle Area swept West Branch 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.
The sisters had 11 kills apiece. Mae also led the team with three blocks and Grace had three aces.
Taylor Kilmer also had three blocks, Alyson Onder had 17 digs and Madison Rockey dished out 29 assists for the Lady Eagles.
Lady Rams cruise past Lady Wildcats
SPRING MILLS Emma Butler had 14 kills and 10 digs to lead Penns Valley in a sweep of Central Mountain 25-18, 25-23, 25-15.
Morgan Kerstetter tied Butler for the digs lead. Abby Miller handed out 12 assists for the Lady Rams.
Penns Valley hits the court Tuesday hosting Clearfield.
Glendale sweeps Lady Wolves
FLINTON Ruthanna McMurtrie had five kills as St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy fell to Glendale 3-0.
McMurtrie and Ana Legaspi led their team with nine attacks in the 25-21, 25-13, 25-20 setback.
Maddie Helfer had four aces from the service line.
Lady Eagles edge Lady Little Lions
MECHANICSBURG Sally Stahl had the lone goal for State College as it fell to Cumberland Valley 2-1.
The Lady Little Lions’ Grace Biddle made 12 saves in the net.
Sam Krebs and Maddie Brown-Scherer had the goals for the Lady Eagles.
