Penn State’s Cal Mende is among 20 men selected to try out for the U.S. Junior National Men’s Volleyball Team.
The training camp begins Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y., with the team trimmed to 12 to play in the FIVB Men’s U-21 World Championship, which begins June 23 in the Czech Republic.
The 6-foot-11 right-side hitter, who will be a redshirt sophomore next season and is one of three opposites on the U.S. roster, earned AVCA second-team All-America status after posting 325 kills on .294 hitting with 81 blocks and 11 aces last season.
The U.S. team is coached by George Mason’s Jay Hosack, a former Nittany Lion assistant coach.
